What People Actually Call About
You do not need to know what is wrong to call. Describe what the machine
is doing in ordinary words and we will work out the rest — that is
the job. Here are the ones that come up week after week, and what
normally sits behind them.
It Will Not Turn On
No lights, no fan noise, a black screen, or it starts and dies a second
later. This is almost always one of a short list: the power supply or
charger, the battery, a stick of memory that has worked loose, or the
motherboard. We test them in order — cheapest and most likely
first — and tell you which one it is before anything gets
replaced. A machine that will not power on is also the classic case
where nothing can be done remotely; there is no computer running for us
to connect to.
It Is Unbearably Slow
Slow is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and the causes have wildly different
price tags. It might be a mechanical hard drive that a modern operating
system has simply outgrown, too little memory for the way you work, a
dozen programs quietly launching at startup, a drive that is failing and
retrying bad sectors, or malware using the processor for somebody else.
We measure which one it is rather than guessing, because guessing here is
how people end up replacing a whole computer to solve a problem that a
single inexpensive part would have fixed.
A Blue Screen, Or It Restarts By Itself
Windows stops with a blue screen when something at the very bottom of the
system misbehaves — usually a driver, failing memory, a dying
drive, or heat. The screen carries a stop code and the machine writes a
crash file; both of those name the culprit far more often than people
expect. If it happens again, photograph the screen with your phone. It
genuinely shortens the job.
Pop-Ups, Warnings And Scareware
A full-screen warning that says your computer is infected and gives you
a number to call is itself the attack. Real security software
never asks you to phone anyone, and neither Microsoft nor Apple puts a
support line on a web page. We clear it out, then find how it got in
— a browser extension, a bad download, a hijacked search setting
— because removing the pop-up without closing the door means you
will see it again.
You Clicked Something In An Email
Everybody does eventually. The invoice you were half expecting, the
delivery notice, the message that looked exactly like your bank. What
matters now is speed and honesty, not embarrassment. We treat it as a
security incident rather than an inconvenience: what ran, what it
touched, which accounts were signed in on that machine, and what needs a
new password today. Skip ahead to

A Cracked Screen Or A Broken Hinge
Laptop screens, hinges, keyboards and batteries are replaceable parts,
and on most business-class machines they are straightforward. We identify
the exact panel or part for your model, quote it to you before it is
ordered, and fit it. On some very thin laptops the screen and the lid are
one bonded assembly, which changes the sum completely — we tell you
that up front, along with whether the repair still makes sense.
It Is Clicking, Or Files Have Vanished
A drive that clicks, grinds or freezes the whole computer for thirty
seconds at a time is a drive telling you it is going. Stop using it. Every
further minute a failing drive spends powered on is a minute it can spend
making a recoverable situation worse. This is where repair ends and
data recovery, backup and forensics begins,
and it is a different discipline with different tools.
It Gets Hot, Then Shuts Itself Off
Usually dust. Fans and heatsinks fill with it, the machine can no longer
move heat out, the processor slows itself down to survive, and eventually
the computer cuts power to protect itself. So we open it up, clean the
fans and heatsinks properly, and renew the thermal paste that has dried
out. It is unglamorous and it is one of the biggest speed improvements an
older machine will ever get. Cleaning machines on a schedule, before they
start complaining, is exactly why preventative maintenance is written into
a managed IT agreement.
The Printer Has Stopped
Printers fail in boring, fixable ways: a driver that a Windows update
quietly replaced, a print queue jammed by one bad document that now blocks
everything behind it, a printer that was given a new address by the router
and never told the computers, or scanning that works while printing does
not. Nearly all of this is fixable remotely while you stay in your chair.
The Wi-Fi Keeps Dropping
First we establish whether it is the computer, the router or the internet
connection itself, because all three feel identical from the desk. On one
machine it is often a wireless card whose power-saving setting switches it
off, or an old driver. Across a whole house or office it is usually where
the router sits, a neighboring network on the same channel, or asking one
consumer router to cover more building than it can. That larger version is
networks, servers and cloud work.

Emergency
If You Think You Have Malware, Do This Right Now
A pop-up you cannot close, a link you wish you had not clicked, or somebody on
the phone claiming to be from Microsoft. This is the part that matters in the
first ten minutes, and none of it requires any technical skill.
Disconnect From The Internet
Unplug the network cable, or turn off the Wi-Fi from the machine. Most
modern malware has to reach the internet to finish its job — to
download the rest of itself, to send off what it has taken, or to receive
the instruction to start encrypting your files. Cutting the connection is
the single most effective thing an untrained person can do, and it costs
nothing to be wrong about.
Do Not Type Any Password On That Computer
Not to “log in and check”, not to dismiss the warning, not into
your bank. If something is recording keystrokes, everything you type goes
with it. Change passwords from a different device — your phone on
cellular data, or another computer entirely.
Do Not Call The Number On The Screen
And do not let anybody who telephoned you connect to the machine.
Nobody legitimate calls to tell you your computer is infected, and no real
error message has ever included a support phone number. If you have already
let a caller in, say so plainly when you call us — that machine has to
be treated as fully compromised, and knowing changes what we do first.
Do Not Pay Anyone
Not the pop-up, not the caller, not the ransom note. Paying funds the next
one and very often returns nothing. Watch especially for the refund trick,
where a caller shows you that they have “accidentally refunded too
much” and asks you to send the difference back — that fake
screen is how the money actually leaves real accounts.
Leave It Alone And Call Us
Resist running three cleanup tools you found through a search; several of
the top results for that search are the problem, not the cure. Turning the
computer off is fine and often sensible. Then call

Then Change These Passwords, From A Different Device
Your email first. It is the password-reset route into everything else you own, so it is the account an attacker wants most.
Online banking, and anything holding a saved card or bank detail.
Work accounts and remote access — and tell whoever looks after your company IT before you do anything else, even if the computer is yours.
Anything that shares that password. If the same password is used in two places, both are now compromised.
Turn on two-step verification wherever it is offered. A stolen password is worth far less when a code on your phone is also needed.
If banking or card details were used on that machine, tell your bank. They would far rather hear from you early.
This advice is free and it works whether or not you ever call us. If it turns
out to have been nothing, you have lost an evening and gained better
passwords.
Virus & Malware
What “The Virus Is Removed” Should Actually Mean
Running a scanner, deleting what it flags and rebooting is not removal. It is
the part everybody can see. An infection is only genuinely gone when the way
it starts, the way it hides and the way it came in have all been dealt with.
What We Check After The Scan
Everything set to run automatically — startup entries, scheduled tasks and services, which is where infections re-launch themselves from
Browser extensions, changed home pages and hijacked search settings, the most common thing left behind
Proxy and DNS settings, which can quietly send your traffic somewhere else while everything looks completely normal
New user accounts, and any remote-access software that a caller installed while they had you on the phone
Whether the antivirus, the firewall or Windows Update was switched off — disabling the defenses is usually step one for the malware, and nobody switches them back on afterwards
Where the machine tries to connect once it is back online, which is the honest test of whether anything is still resident
How it got in, so the same route is not left open behind us
Sometimes The Honest Answer Is To Rebuild It
We would rather say so than hand back a machine we are not sure about. A
wipe and reinstall is the right call when a stranger on the phone was given
remote control, when files have been encrypted, when the infection sits
below the operating system, when the same thing comes back after a clean,
or when the computer holds financial, medical or client records and
“probably clean” is not a standard anyone should accept.
A rebuild is not a disaster and it is not us giving up. It means copying
your data off and checking it first, reinstalling the operating system from
scratch, putting your programs and printers back, returning your files, and
then setting up a backup so that the next bad day is an inconvenience
instead of a catastrophe. That backup piece is covered properly under
data recovery and backup.

Upgrades Still Worth Doing — And When To Stop Spending
Two upgrades transform an older computer, and most of the others do not. Here
is what each one actually fixes, and just as importantly what it will not,
so nobody spends money on the wrong end of the problem.

Solid-state drive (SSD)
Long start-ups, programs that take an age to open, and the general sense that the computer is always waiting. On any machine still using a spinning hard disk this is the single biggest improvement available, and it is usually not close.
A machine short of memory, an infection, or a fault on the motherboard.
More memory (RAM)
Freezing and stuttering once several programs or a lot of browser tabs are open, and the pause every time you switch between them.
Slow start-up caused by an old hard drive. Adding memory to a machine with a spinning disk disappoints people constantly.
Clean-out and new thermal paste
Overheating, roaring fans, shutdowns under load, and the slowdown a hot processor imposes on itself to survive.
A part that has already physically failed.
Fresh operating system install
Years of accumulated software mess, updates that will not complete, and inherited settings nobody remembers making.
Any hardware fault. If the drive is dying, a reinstall makes it worse.
Larger drive with everything moved across
Running out of space, and carrying a machine you like forward a few more useful years.
A drive that is already failing — that is recovery first, upgrade afterwards.
When A Computer Is Not Worth Repairing
We will tell you. It is the least profitable sentence in this business and it
is the reason people call back years later. The signals are consistent:
The repair approaches what a comparable replacement machine would cost, especially once a second part is involved
The memory and the drive are soldered to the board, so the two upgrades that would have helped are not possible
The parts are no longer manufactured, and what is available is salvaged with an unknown history
The operating system is out of support and this machine cannot be upgraded — that means no more security patches, which matters far more than speed
It is a laptop with more than one thing failing at once, which is usually age rather than bad luck
When that is the verdict we say so, help you work out what to buy for the way
you actually use a computer rather than what is on the end-cap, and move
everything across. We would rather sell you nothing today.
New Machines
New Computer Setup, And Moving Everything Across
The unpacking is the easy part. What people dread is the week afterwards,
when something they needed turns out to have stayed behind on the old
machine.
What “Everything” Includes
Documents, photographs, downloads and whatever is loose on the desktop are
the obvious ones, and they are rarely the ones that cause trouble. The
items people forget are the ones that hurt: browser bookmarks and saved
logins, email — including older archived mail that lives only on that
computer — the programs themselves along with their license keys,
scanners and printers, and the small settings that make a computer feel
like yours rather than like a rental.
We also deliberately leave things behind: the trialware the manufacturer
pre-installed, the toolbars, the duplicate security products fighting each
other, and anything we found while cleaning the old machine. A migration is
the one clean opportunity to not carry a decade of clutter forward.
And we do not wipe the old computer on the same day. It stays exactly as it
is until you have lived on the new one long enough to be sure nothing is
missing. When you are ready, we erase it properly before it is donated,
recycled or handed on — deleting files and emptying the recycle bin
does not remove them from the drive, and a second-hand machine sold with
its data still readable is a genuinely common way for personal information
to escape.
Setting Up A New Machine For Work
A business computer needs more than the files. It has to be named
sensibly, joined to the network so shared folders and printers appear,
signed in to Microsoft 365 with mail and calendars working on the
first morning, given the line-of-business software everybody else runs, and
set up so the person who sits at it cannot accidentally break it. If that
applies to several machines rather than one, the sane way to run it is
proper network, server and cloud setup
underneath it all.

Patient Help, Without Being Talked Down To
A large share of this work is not repair at all. It is sitting with somebody
who wants to be shown how, and explaining it in a way that lets them do it
themselves next time.
For Homes And Families
You do not need the right words. “The thing with the picture on
it” is a perfectly good description and we will work out what you
mean. We do not sigh, we do not take the mouse away and do it silently, and
we do not answer in jargon either.

Will I lose my files?
Protecting what is on the machine comes before the repair. Where the
drive still allows it, we copy the data off before doing anything that
could put it at risk. If the drive itself is the fault, that becomes a
data recovery job and we will be straight
with you about what is realistic — nobody honest promises a
failed drive in advance.
